I second the motion regarding trying other sets and gauges ... Variety is the spice of life!

I have usually been using the Regular Slinkys on my SR5. Every once in a while though, I'll go with the Power Slinkys. If, you haven't tried those on your SR5, you're missing an AWSOME low B string tone, along with some extra guts on the first and second strings. I just put on a set of 5 String Flatwounds, model #2810. They are also very nice. I'll play them a few more weeks before I draw a final conclusion on the flatwounds.

News Flash!

Hey all, just wanted to call attention to the Strings Used at the top of this thread. I just edited it - John Petrucci has gone back to 10's as of today!

Best to all,

Dan

Strings for fretless basses

Some have said to use flatwounds to protect the fretboard. What say you?

What type of strings would you recommend for a fretless bass with an ebony fretboard?

Flatwounds definitely are the easiest on the fretboard, but there is very distinct tonal difference. Not better or worse - just different.

I would recommend whatever sounds best to your ear through your rig (the wear on the neck not being the primary issue in my opinion). Personally I use the same Slinky Bass roundwounds on fretless as any other bass, because to me the sound is the most important thing. Yet others would say flatwounds. It really depends on the sound you're going for. I always recommend trying these different things yourself, because in the end you're the one who is going to have to make that call.

35" Scale Length - Taper Wound?

I play a Schecter Stiletto Elite 5 string and I'm looking for strings for the 35" scale length. Are all Ernie Ball Bass strings standard 34" length only? My bass was strung with taper wound B and E strings. Are there any Ernie Ball taper wound strings? Thanks!

No, all Ernie Ball bass strings are 34" and none of them are tapered.

Paul, your JP, being Olive Gold, would definitely have been strung with 10-46 RPS strings at the factory.

Dan, pls help me....
the guitar was completed on 10/29/08 as you informed me on the serial no post,
and earlier in this post you said that JP has gone back to 10's starting March 2009.
so having this...are the strings on my JP Olive gold 9's or 10's? on the store the guitar was bought it appears the guitar was with 9's.
I want to change them soon and I can't figure what gauge they are. the setup was done when I received a month ago with this strings gauge and I want to keep the string the setup was made with.

thanks a lot.

Paul

Paul,

If I said March 2009 - that was incorrect! The actual date we went back to 10's was March 2008. Sorry for the confusion.
