Strings Used On Music Man Instruments

There seems to be some confusion as to this subject - so I, being the stellar CS Rep that I am, would like to clarify this matter.

This is what Music Man instruments are strung with at the factory:

Guitars:


Silhouette & Silhouette Special: RPS-9 Slinkys (9-42) catalog #2239

Axis: Super Slinkys (9-42) catalog #2223

Axis SuperSport with DiMarzio humbuckers: RPS-9 Slinkys (9-42) catalog #2239

Axis SuperSport with MM-90 pickups: RPS-10 Slinky (10-46) catalog #2240

Steve Morse: 10-13-16(all RPS)-26-32-42, available in single strings only

Albert Lee: 10-13-16(all RPS)-26-36-46 available in single strings only

Luke: RPS-9 Slinkys (9-42) catalog #2239

John Petrucci: RPS-10 Slinkys (10-46) catalog #2240 (changed 11/5/07 to RPS-9's and changed back on 3/11/08)

Benji Madden: 12-16-(RPS) - 24w-32-42-52 available in single strings only

SUB-1 guitar: RPS-9 Slinkys (9-42) catalog #2239

The John Petrucci 7-string guitar now uses RPS-10's with an added .56 nickelwound for the low B string. (also changed 11/5/07 and changed back on 3/11/08)

NEW: The John Petrucci BFR Baritone is tuned to B flat and is strung up thusly: 12-16-22p-34-46-62

A couple of notes:

1. The BFR series use the same strings as their original namesake models.

2. Though we use and recommend RPS strings, standard Ernie Ball Slinkys are a worthy substitute.

3. The strings are the same whether the guitar is equipped with a tremolo or not.

Basses:

This one is a little easier - All Music Man 4-string basses are strung with #2834 Super Slinky Bass strings (45-65-80-100)

All Music Man 5-string basses are strung with #2836 Regular Slinky Bass strings (45-65-80-100-130)

The Bongo 6 is strung with our #2838 Slinky 6-string set (32-45-65-80-100-130)

The Silhouette Bass is strung with either the Silhouette Bass Set #2837 (20w-30-42-54-74-90) or the Baritone Slinky Bass set #2839 (13-18-30-44-56-72)

so as lame as this sounds, what strings does JP ACTUALLY use on tour and in the studio? the same RPS 9's or does he use 10's, or a different setup?

I'm pretty confused.. I've got a JP-7... so it comes with a set of 9-42's + a 56 for the b string (is the 56 usually found in a 7 string 10 set?)

i just got it from the dealer untouched... and the tech said that the calipers told him it had a 10-46 set on it? so is he wrong or...

Toppers, if it was made before November last year, it should have the 10-56 set on it. If it was made after that, it should have the the set you described, the 9-42 with the added 56.

as in november of 07...? in any case i got him to put a set of the hybrid 9-46's on er and the action is pretty much unbeatably low... thanks again for the wicked instrument

I'm surprised they wouldn't ... I know we send 'em plenty to their central warehouse. I'd lobby 'em to get them or shop elsewhere!

I should probably point out ... while these are the gauges the instruments are strung with at the factory, it does not preclude y'all trying other (hopefully still Ernie Ball) sets and gauges ... everyone needs to find their own way in that regard. It was really just to let everyone know what they started with for reference sake.
