Question: Are all EB wound electric strings wound all the way to the end?

Hello All,

I just put new regular slinkys (10-46) on my JP6 and had a difficult time getting the wound strings (E and A) through the Schaller tuners. I eventually got it, but took some effort and "creativity"....

I think it would be easier if the strings were not wound all the way, that way they wouldn't be as thick and it can be threaded through easier.

Do all EB string sets have the wound strings wound right to the end? Any sets that don't?

You gotta mess with them a bit sometimes. It's not the strings' fault and it's not the tuners' fault. Make sure you're putting it through at the right angle. I find that sometimes I have to make sure the string is going through completely straight or it gets stuck on the other side of the tuner. I used to use D'Addario strings which aren't wound all the way and it was actually worse than Ernie Ball strings.

This issue is worse on the JP7 guitars with a .056 string. After a few string changes, you'll get used to it.

Yeah, I figured it was a case of just getting more practice in and I will get better at it.

One thing I did notice in comparison to the other EBMM's I have that have the schaller locking tuners is that my JP6 doesn't have the tuning head as far exposed as the other do and as such the string hole is sunken slightly below the nut that holds the tuner in place, and that is where the issue lies when trying to pass the string through.

It's not a huge discrepancy, but I imagine it was a case of the right combination of manufacturing tolerances between the tuner post length, nut thread, headstock thickness etc......

I noticed that on mine as well. My JP6 is that way, but my JP7s aren't that way at all. I find that I kind of have to angle the string upwards through the post to get it to go through right. It's a hassle sometimes, but in the long run the locking tuners still save tons of time and tuning stability is amazing.
