Dave Murray. Is There Anyone Similar?
 

I'm just listenning to A Real Live Dead One, and something struck me. Is there any other guitarist out there that plays like Dave Murray of Iron Maiden...I don't think there is, especially in Heavy Metal. I mean he's no technical wiz, but the feel he puts into the hammer ons and pull offs(not to mention the speed) are simply amazing. He truly is a unique guitar player.

I always felt that he and Adrian Smith were 2 of the most under-rated guitarists out there. They never got a lot of press that I can recall, not flashy, but damn they could jam.

"Live After Death" still ranks up there as one of my favorites.

Right on bro, and spoken well...definately not typical metal guitarists...I'd love to sit and listen to them jam the blues :D

I always thought that a couple of the solos on "Somewhere In Time" were some of the most melodic solos I had heard at the time for a "heavy metal" band.

They both had a knack for making them flow with the song and not just rip out something to fill a few dozen bars and call it a solo.

As far as comparisons???? Hmmmm, I gotta think about that one.

To me the two most melodic albums in not only solos, but also in the two guitarists filling in with haronies and stuff are Somwhere in Time and Seventh Son, they had unbelieveable artistic freedom then....

Yeah, I don't those guys get the recognition they deserve. They kinda just quietly do their thing and don't really ask for any acolades. I think Dave and Adrian's different styles complement each other well too. My observations (and I could be wrong about it): Dave kinda plays more legatto like with lots of hammer ons and pull offs where Adrian seems more "technical" but equally as good.

So instant poll for all you maiden fans out there, are you more of a "Dave" or an "Adrian"?

Well put, its hard for me, there are days when an Adrian solo will bring a tear to my eye...and days when Dave just rips open my spine. I thought I always favoured Adrian, but Dave is so damn unique, uncomplicated and smooth...tough call...I've been rocking to these two since the 80's (for about 20 years)!

Tough call, but something that I always thought was that Maiden wasn't the same when Adrian left to do his solo thing for a couple of records.

Dave and Jannick just didn't have the same feel, the lead trade-offs weren't as spontaneous but seemed forced to me. Could be that I just had a problem with Adrian leaving the band. I'm glad he returned though.

I don't know why they keep Jannick around now, all I ever see him do is run around and throw his giutar around his back. :rolleyes: Just play it damnit!

Of course this is just my opinion...

Well I'll be honest, at first I only liked Janick when he worked on Bruce's solo stuff, more rock guitar. I felt his tone and his chops were dirty on his first two efforts, No Prayer and Fear of...however since Brave New World, and Dance of Death, I have gained a new inkling for his style...he's like a Hendrix/Page mixture...I actually dig his style...he's got his own thing going...plus he writes remarkable songs...if you read the credits, he's actually a huge factor in the writing process...

i think all three of them are good together....granted, Adrian and Dave are the best, but i still think Janick fits too


"Brave New World" is a masterpiece to me in terms of that melodic maiden lead playing,

the title track...mmmm tasty

"The Mercenery" (idk if i spelled that right) has a great example of one of Adrian's spine tingling solos.....the first lick just...whooooooooooa
