Hi,
I have a sunburst stingray 4 fretless, serial number D 07816. However the neck pocket date says Sept 16, 1987. It can be viewed here.

Can you tell me anything about that instrument, and about some of the date confusion?

Thanks.

It has a plastic battery holder....they weren't introduced on the Bass Guitar untill c. 1995.

Could the "8" be a distorted "9"? (ie 1997 rather than 1987). The "D" serial is consistent with 1997.

The new SR5 should have ceramic pickups (same as the sr4 now), unless of course it's been there for a while in which case the pickups might be alnico, you can answer that question yourself if you know it literally just came in maybe a month ago or less or if it's been there a while. The wood should be ash as is standard with all rays (i think)
