(Speaking using voice of Dale Gribble from KING OF THE HILL:

[lights cigarette] I think that the swine flu is just something that the government is using to oppress those of good health in the first place....What do you think, John Redcorn? You think Nancy's headaches are just a psychosomatic response to the government's lies?

I had to chuckle yesterday when the radio news personality said (in a very serious-soundly and dramatic tone) that the "number of confirmed cases in NY has more than doubled..."

...from 2 to 5.

The "war to end all wars", WWI, killed approximately 18 million people over the course of four years.

The global death toll from the 1918 flu was long pegged at 20 million, but most experts now think that grossly low. They talk of 50 million, perhaps 100 million.

And in 1918, people weren't flying all over the globe, vacationing in foreign countries, having layovers in Mexico City while on their way to Argentina and so on.

Just something to think about.

+ the 1, what did avian flu really do? It killed a couple of chickens. Yes i understand that it destroyed some people's livelihood, i'm not sure if it killed anyone or what, but the media sure did a good job of blowing it WAY out of proportion, and being that pigs can't fly, i'm not too worried, being from the UK and all, but we'll see. There's always a big health scare every few years, am i the only one that's not incredibly worried? Though it is our own fault.... being incredibly over-populated and all.

Avian flu killed 70+ people in Indonesia when I was living there in 2005-06. Most of those who died had chicken coops in their backyards, so they were in the thick of it so to speak. I'm not sure what the worldwide death toll was, I'm sure you could Google it, from memory it was a few hundred or thereabouts.

This is exactly the point, though. A FEW HUNDRED is nowhere near the thousands who die from regular flu EACH YEAR. This is just a big media scare.

We can talk about the flu, but let's not get political.

Thanks in advance,

Jack

just wash your damn hands with warm water and soap. Don't even need the anti-bacterial stuff. (psst, the flu is a virus. )

H1N1 has a high morbidity rate, but the avian flu had a higher mortality rate. A lot less people caught the avian flu, but a higher percentage of those who did get it died.

Then again, everybody dies eventually.

I got lucky. I was in Thunder Bay Ontario on business and I heard they had a surplus of H1N1 vaccine there. They had a vaccination clinic that day at the University. So I lined up, 15 minutes later I got my shot.
