Here's a quick word-up for the 2H Bongo.
(Did I miss props for the H-SC version while I was out??)

Anyways, My 1st MM, the Sterling, is your basic H- and it's a go-to bass for all seasons- I haven't encountered a session or a gig, or an application yet where that (1) pup and a 3-band eq can't nail "the" sound required.

The recently, along came my 1st Bongo, which happened to be born a 2H...

Holy *&%%$!
Ya got Bass, ya got treble, ya got your high mids, your low mids, and if that weren't more than enough, you have the Secret Sauce Control- aka "that knob which blends the 2!! pickups."

Oh wow.
First you get your tone centers set, THEN you get to play with them even MORE by panning betwixt neo pups.

It should really be Illegal to have that much fun while playing the Bass; In fact, I believe in States and Countries that contain any combination of the letters:
"I", "M", "K" and "C"...It is!

Not sure why, but you've been advised.

And my vote would be for the 2H...

I know your in Ontario and I think I know where there may be one to try in Mississauga, if memory seves me it's a HH model.

I know exactly what you mean. I did that and I am screwed now. I tried 5 different Bongo's yesterday afternoon. The store was empty...just me, a Markbass amp, and Bongo's to try. Perfect.

I cannot believe how the low frequencies resonate on the Bongo. I mean, it was like the earth itself decided to take a big, massive, satisfying dump. That thing just rumbles! The ground was shaking and I was still only playing a 4 string. The 5 string frightens me. Holy smokes!

Ok, so here is the dilemna. I also give lots of presentations to kids with hearing loss to show them how to get the most out of their hearing. One part of the demo includes me playing bass via an FM system designed for kids with hearing loss.

The last two demos I did, I never brought my Sterling because I dont want the little sticky fingers touching my precious. Obviously, I would not want these munchkins touching my Bongo either.

So, do I

1. Pick up a lesser expensive Sterling By Music Man as a second bass. I would string that one with flats and keep rounds on my "real" Sterling. I would use the one with flats for my classic rock gigs and for the kid's demos I do.

2. Save my money and start saving for a Bongo. I would need to save for about 10 months (I did some budgeting). Maybe look into getting a really cheap used bass for the kids demos.

No worries BP. I like the personal touch of going into an actual Music Store. The boys at Long and McQuade treat me well and I want to support them with my business. Plus the warranty issue is a big one.

That is EXACTLY what happened to me yesterday. See my other post about the earth rumbling and having a bowel movement.

And I completely agree with you about the Sterling. Single H, working man's bass. Good all round tone. Can't go wrong. I am so glad I got this as my first MM bass.

Now that you've gotten your hands on a Bongo, sooner or later you'll have to get one. It will haunt you if you don't go for it.

This is just the normal progression of the disease. Nothing to be worried about.

if you have a store in your area that has 5 bongos and you find one that you like ...but it then look for a second hand mm by sterling THose kind of stores are rare

Get the Bongo, clearly!

I love both my basses, especially the Bongo, but that doesn't stop me from taking it to work. I don't neccesarily enjoy watching my bass being chewed on, but it sounds great and plays great, and I enjoy having it around.

Get a Bongo.

look on this forum for used Bongos. Forum members are quite trustworthy and helpful imho. You can save a lot of money to boot.

However, if you want the warranty (which is a compelling reason to buy new), crave a new instrument and/or need a hard to find color combination, then buy new.

I was one who, before trying them, felt Musicman instruments were overpriced. Having played two over the last couple of years, I now think they are fairly priced... ie, you get what you pay for: a fantastic instrument built in the USA with superb customer service.

I know one member from Canada who already has a Dargie Delight II Bongo 5H for sale. Find one of those at the Great Canadian Music Store. And no PST or HST. Are you looking for a 4 or 5 string?
