Question: where did all things figured necks come from?

i thought that EB didnt have more figured birdseye or flame wood,like they had late 80's early 90's i was just wondering where all this beautiful wood they are using on the new classics came from??

I never saw it mentioned that they can't get it, it's just a lot more expensive than it used to be so they only use it on special basses with an upcharge.

Figured maple is a lot more expensive now than it used to be. When it flowed like water, why not use it (religious wars about stability aside). But when it begins to elevate production cost & cut into your margin or blow your price point, the choice is obvious. In the case of the Deluxe Classics, that increased cost is understanbly passed on to those who are willing to pay it.

Even in 1992 people would look at my (then new) SR5 and say "what a neck!" Even then they were becoming rarer to find on a production instrument.

To be perfectly honest, I was so spoiled by that bass being not only a monster but a looker that I didn't even pick up another MM in the stores for years after that. I didn't think they could get any better.

That said, I'm really looking forward to the Deluxe Classics!
