What's a good amp to match with a SUB 1??

Hey,

Just wondering what kind of amp you fellow forumites think would match up well with a SUB 1? I'm playing it through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and I'm having trouble getting it to sound good to my ears through this amp.......sounds really trebley/brash to me.

I find that I can get it to sound much smoother through my little Vox Cambridge 15.

Any thoughts?? Thanks all.

I'd think it depends on the type of tone you're going for...I'm sure it would sound good through a number of amps..just different depending on what you're going for...

Those are sweet little amps. Even the Cube 30 will do in a lot of cases. I tried one out and was really impressed with some of the sounds coming out of that tiny little box.

I'm not really sure how to describe the tone I'm after, kinda fat & bluesy I guess would be the best way to put it. I have a guitar with single coils (lower output pickups compared with those in my SUB) and that guitar sounds great through my Hot Rod DLX, whereas my SUB has this really harsh sounding high-end through the Hot Rod. The SUB plays absolutely amazingly, so I'd like to solve the problem by dealing with the amp somehow......maybe time to try a few other amps out, the Roland Cube (as suggested here), and maybe a Vox Valetronix....hmmmm

Id prolly try another pickupin the Sub before I changed my amp. Some pickup companies even allow exchange withing 30 days if your not satisfied with the sound (Seymour Duncan) I would be a whole lot cheaper and more fun to do. You know the amp is capable of sounding great with the single coils, just find a H/B to compliment it too. Another option would be to replace the 500k Vol pot with a 250k one. This is a $5 fix that might just bleed the top end from your pickup a bit.

the 12ax7 preamp tubes may be the source of the harshness . china tubes sound hash.
fender used them ALOT for a while.........cause they last. jj's are usally a little warmer....

Those SUB pickups sound great. I wouldn't go changing them. I played 'em through a Marshall JCM2000 DSL and they were fantastic both clean and distorted.

Try some other amps at a music store before you blame those pickups.

Ive got no doubt the pickups sound great, but if they dont match the amp, its a cheaper option than buying a new one.

..but if the amp can't sound good with those pickups, it probably won't sound good with any pickups.

They really are great sounding pickups.

I've been an analog, tube proponent for years, but I have to admit - I was amp shopping monday afternoon for a good modelling practice amp. I tried the little (1x12 or 1x10 size) modelling amps from Marshall, VOX, Fender, Crate and Line 6 in GC, and I was underwhelmed. I drove over to another local store and tried a Cube 30 for the first time - That little monster smokes.

The marshall (classic stack?) sound was better than the Marshall model amps, and the Recto sound was killer. I want to find a Cube 60 and try it, then I'm going to buy a 30 or a 60. My Mesa doesn't get much use anymore - It takes too much work to get different sounds, and it's too loud for 2 AM recording sessions in my dining room. I don't like the heavily processed, 37 effects at once rack stuff I used to have. I like the idea of a simple knob an bam! you're there. Pretty cool little amp.
