Hi tv,
Thanks, it came originally with a white pearl pickguard, i replaced it with the cream one that is in the pictures. I'm not really sure which looks better.

That guitar plays awesome too. You would think that two Albert Lee's would have similar playability, but really, the sunburst plays nice and all, but the black one is defenately superior in playability.

Here's the MM90 like it looked before, what do you think looks better? (if you can see the difference at all, pretty bad pics):

Cream, definitely. The only thing I'm not sure about is if you should get matching cream knobs. I'm thinking no, you've got it just right.

I think with black pickups a black body is definitely the thing to have...

What you say about playability is interesting. Were they both bought new? My AL's certainly feel different, but they're both playable in their own way...the new one feels better to me, but I suspect a good setup would cure the older one.

The older one just has a nice broken in vibe.

TV,

Yeah i agree, i good setup is very important to start with.

i bought the MM90 new, i found it at an EB dealer in Germany.
The sunburst is a 2000 model, i got it through ebay US.
Even unplugged they have a totally different sound, the mm90 sounds much brighter. And they just have a different feel.

Eventhough the sunburst is only 3+ years old i can tell it has been played a lot. The neck is not the cleanest anymore, also some fretwear etc. Must have something to do with it i guess.

Maybe i should start with giving it the lemon oil and gunstock oil/wax treatment.
I've read here that it can make a big difference in sound.

Also, one is a trem version, the other a hardtail. Maybe that also makes a difference when played unplugged, i don't really know.
Anyway, they're both fantastic guitars, you just want to get the best out of them i guess.

btw, nice jam pictures, looks like you guys had a fun time there Did you use the tweed Peavey classic amp?
I've got one of those and i like em a lot.

Michell

hey ernie1966... i noticed that the red in the front center of the first picture has an uncoverd piezo trem, different knobs and no arm cradle contour. This wouldnt happen to be the prototype model that was being sold on ebay a while back? would it? I remember that thing!!! it was cool. Did you get it from ebay or were you trying to sell it?

God bless,

Tony

actually now i remember more looking at the other pic... it was a prototype for the color change finish as well... petrucci didnt end up going with the color scheme of that particular guitar. In fact it was one that he played if im not mistaken? but either way amazing pictures... im putting them on my desktop to hold me over till i get my JP. hhaha thanks

get back to me on that though..

God bless,

Tony

Tony,

you're right. that petrucci was the prototype sold on ebay. It's funny, the first time it was on ebay i missed it, so i couldn't believe when the first buyer put it up on ebay. i was so pissed that i missed it the first time. now it's mine all mine!

you're also right about the differences, very shallow arm contour, non-stock piezio bridge, the piezio pre-amp is in the control cavity, different knobs, neck is a little wider and has a flatter radius(the production model necks are far better), the shield inlays have a black line tracing the shape of the shield, no petrucci signature. color is called "black fire" chages from red to rust to crimson, never put into prodution, John didn't like it.

this is the red guitar Jonh is trying on the video on the music man site.

Hi,

Here's a pic of my Wolfgang Special that is morphing into an EVH that I stupidly sold. I moved the toggle to the main ctl cavity and added a coil-cut switch. Pickups are Norton bridge and Paf Pro neck. I originally tried a Tone Zone and Air Zone but wanted less bass. I modded the neck too. The original fret height was .052" and I leveled them down to .042". The fingerboard had a sharp edge so I sanded some curve into it. I also gunsotcked and waxed the neck.

I also had a Silhouette Special that I REALLY wish I never sold. I sometimes think of selling the Wolf to get a Sil, but since i modded it so much, I woulded get hardly anything for it.
