I dig John 5 - and Koogs is right Candid - you'd be surprised who else he's played with. Listening to a John5 album the tracks go back and forth between shred metal and country chick'n pickin'. On his disc Songs for Sanity he's even got a duet with our own Albert Lee called Death Valley. Interesting guy if you've ever seen an interview. He's really into all aspects of playing.

Plus it makes me chuckle when we get the inevitable question about the Axis or other guitars...........yeah ,but can you play metal on it???.... John 5 plays some serious shred on a Tele (with a bucker in the bridge) but a tele none the less.

Ah, my son has talked about John 5, and I have seen some youtube vids before, and just watched a few more. Yeah, the guy's pretty amazing. Just watched a country instructional video of his. So much for telling books by covers, huh. Nice to see stereotypes shattered.

Thanks!

He is a very cool dude it seems. I have read interviews and what not with him. Very knowledgable guy who is very humble to say the least. Never judge a book by it's cover applies here for sure...lol.

thats funny i used a cherryburst american delux tele for the down payment on a axis ss last week. That fender sounded realy good tuned to d with some nice distortion. the single coils are super articulate and sound awsome in high gain settings.

Drop Eb is as far as I go, but I'd love to have a guitar sitting around ready for the low stuff so this thread could prove useful to me.

I don't like putting too heavy of strings on cause it widens the nut, and I can't stand when the strings are too floppy. Seems like a 7 stringer would be the perfect choice accompanied by a 5 string bass.

When I do tune down I use a less drive and layered approach for recording.

my guitar tuned down to b will need a new nut if i go back to light strings. that guitar i have had the longest and its always been tuned down. I have 13-56 on it and with the low tuneing it plays real nice ,not floppy loose and not super tight. If you have a floyd rose with a locking nut you wont need to mess with your nut.

i dont like it at all. but lucky for me he doesnt even really use his production model. it must be an old prototype or something (maybe even a regular tele)
