See if you can track down a Peavey JSX.

Focused gain, mid heavy, smooth leads and above all, it has nice cleans unlike any 5150 or 6505 that you will play.

I already tried the jsx and I didn't like...that was a bit too focused on the mids.
I'd like to avoid signature amps

Marshall JCM 2000 100 watt gets a great sound out of it. (Might just be my opinion) If you throw a digital delay on that you can get a pretty good sound. I as well play through a Jp and it just gives off the "in your face" kinda sound.

As Johnny Dubai said, try a Cornford...I have a feeling thats exactly what you are looking for. Great amps. Agree with you on the JSX...not my thing either.

So I went this morning...
I tried the 6505+, the savage 120, the morse signature engl, a vintage modern and a plexi.
All very nice amps, but I don't know, I really liked the steve morse but something was missing.

Then I happened to come across some pedals, and thought "what if my only problem is that need a bit of help from a pedal?"
So I plugged a bb preamp into a dual recto like mine.....and WOW!!!!.
Set in vintage mode (I don't like the modern) I had EVERYTHING I was looking for!!
harmonics, punch, gain gain gain, compression...it was all there, I didn't really need a new amp, I just needed something to add to the tone.
In the end I played with all the knobs for a while and managed to get a fabulous sound.
So, in the end, I left without buying anything
I would have bought the bb preamp straight on, but I didn't have 200€ with me.

So now I must start considering pedals more than I used to.

Since the bb is quite expensive I was thinking of trying out maybe a ts9.
I'm really glad though that I FINALLY MANAGED TO FIND MY SOUND!!
It's just mind blowing

Congrats phazer on finding your tone.i know the bb preamp is a fantastic pedal and is used by alot of professional guitarist in their rig also.
Il probably add this pedal to my rig when i find my perfect amp first.

Colin - not sure what availability is like in ire but have a look @ Budda if you can. Sounds like it might work for what you want. They are toneful amps with a lot of gain (short of Metal).
Beautiful country you have - my wife and I were there in 2000 and saw it from one end to the other.
Best,
Nick

I have a dual recto, I changed the tube to el34's and it sounds amazing. I have aldo tried kt77's and channel 2 hade the sweetest sweet home alabama tone i have ever heard, but the el34's kick the sh#t out of the 6l6's.

More mids from the EL34s and a little less bottom end. It will still sound like a Recto, but with a british flavor. More crunch instead of distortion. You'd probably like them! Just be sure to flip the bias switch in the back to EL34!!

I'd love to have a BB preamp, but i'd have to pretty much get rid of my GT-8 in order to afford one unless I sell some things... hmmm...

The sound is just way more, BIGGER, FULLER.

The amp went from "lets cut a tree down one at a time" to " lets chop the forest down in one swing"

Its fatter Tighter ballsier

The best amp with the most multidimensional tone I've ever heard is made by Divided by 13. It's the JRT 5/15. These things are such bare essentials, yet they cost a bomb. But they do for your tone what no pedal, rack or EQ can provide.

Just another quick vote for an amp I dont think I have seen mentioned..
I picked up a VHT delivrance 60 watt head this week and it sounds tremendous through my THD 2x12 cab. I have used single coil and humbucking guitars on it - as well as my chambered G&L bluesboy and they allsound great. Only drawbacks are single channel and no loop - but for my needs it works great.
