re: "for sale" ads

EBMM permits forum members to post personal "for sale" ads for Ernie Ball Music Man guitars and related items only (ie. volume pedals, branded strings, straps, etc.), however, EBMM and designated individuals reserve the right to monitor and control content on this forum.

We generally ask that you be around for at least a month before posting an ad. Immediate posts by users selling gear will usually get deleted, as we think that you joined just to sell your gear...not cool. Stick around for a bit to gather some info regarding our community, and you'll come to find that this is a helpful and friendly bunch overall. Then, after that month has passed, sell your gear and stick around...owning an EBMM is welcome, but not required.

Please post only one thread for your sale, and should you relist/need to update, update/bump your initial thread. Duplicate threads can and will be removed with/without notice.

DO NOT post any non-EBMM gear ads here. No dealer ads, though dealers are fully welcome to participate in the forum, and discussion about various dealers is also encouraged.

It's for and about guitars and guitar players - the rest is noise...

UPDATE: The free string promotion was discontinued in April 2004. At this time, the hang tag on the guitars shipped would not specify free strings. If a customer bought a Music Man guitar or bass that was shipped before April with the hang tag that specifies the promotion, Ernie Ball/Music Man will honor that. To claim your strings the hang tag must be sent in to the address provided on the card. On-line registrants after April 2004 would not be subject to free strings.

Requests for free strings post registration of new guitars are handled by one person at EBMM, on top of their regular day to day duties as well (part of their job description also involves holding up the building!).

If you've registered either online (see above) or by mail, and you are warranted free strings per the information above, rest assured you will get your strings. It won't be an overnight thing, and don't plan on using them as immediate spares, but you'll get them.

As the old adage goes, good things come to those that wait.

Please start a new thread when inquiring about a DOB of a guitar and/or related information. DO NOT use an existing thread, as this can cause jumble and confusion within the thread, and delay the information getting to you.

Also, please post your serial # of your EBMM(s) in the thread named "IMPORTANT: My Ernie Ball's Serial # is...". The information you might need in the future may be your own!

Why are there cracks by the neck of my JP/Axis, etc. finish? Is this bad? Should I be concerned?

Short answer: no.

Long answer: the cracks that you see are finish cracks, which means that it is only affecting the paint on the guitar. This is quite common in guitars with hard poly finishes over thin areas in the wood where stress occurs. The finish does not expand and contract at the same rate at which the body does, so you might see small cracks in those areas. 99 times out of 100, these "cracks" that you see are cosmetic in the horn area of a guitar. It's nothing to worry about on a quality or use and playability factor.

As for your more technical questions, I hope that the following mass of info will answer the majority of them. Lastly, no matter what you hear or read anywhere about our pedals, I find it is always worth testing our pedal(s) out in your personal rig to determine if it works/sounds the way you would like. You never know, you may find the perfect tone! Read on....


Passive vs. Active:
Whenever there is a passive signal leading into an EB pedal, the 250K or 500K pedal is recommended (mono VP & VPJR 250K and stereo 500K VP pedals available).

Whenever there is an active signal (powered preamp, powered pedal, effects loop, etc.) leading into an EB pedal, the 25K pot is recommended (stereo VP and mono VPJR pedals available).

If an active signal is placed before a 250K or 500K EB pedal, or if a passive signal is placed before a 25K EB pedal, then the consequence may be that the swell of the pedal does not act as designed. Either way, as stated above, try whatever combination you desire, and determine if it works for you. All of our volume pedals are designed to be as transparent as possible in a signal chain. However, whenever you add any component to a signal chain, the signal will change whether it is audible or not.


Pedal dimensions:The VP's dimensions are approximately 11" x 4" x 2.75" and they weigh about 3.75 lb.
The VPJR's dimensions are approximately 10" x 3.5" x 2.5" and they weigh about 2.25 lb.

Replacing potentiometers with different values and/or from different manufacturers:
For all of our pedals, VP and VPJR, unfortunately the answer is no. In our VP line, the MONO 250K pot cannot be replaced with our STEREO 25K pot, due to design differences in both the circuit and the potentiometer. As for the VPJR line, the 2 pedals were designed so that the user could choose the pedal they desire, and again, the pots cannot be changed due to design differences in the circuit. As for switching the pots between the 2 lines of pedals, this also cannot be accomplished due to size differences in the assembly components. Remember, if you attempt to modify the pedal in any way it voids all warranties!


Minimum volume feature:
Unfortunately we are unable to add a custom minimum volume feature to our current pedal design.

Some of our old style MONO pedals were fit with a taper pot on the side, which gradually modified the taper of the volume pot. In 1998, these taper pots were replaced with a taper switch, which you can now find in all of our 250K mono pedals. This switch was designed to enable the user to choose between the 2 best sounding tapers available in the previous models.

Some of our old style STEREO pedals were fit with a minimum volume pot on the side, which set the volume level of the pedal at the sweep's minimum position. Sometime before 1998, the minimum volume pot was removed from the pedals, and a tuner jack was assembled in it's place. Later, the tuner jack was implemented into a variety of pedals that can be found in our current line of VPs.

I know that one of you new folk may ask about this. Therefore, in order to supply the information you seek (and save me from having to search for the thread to copy and paste this info each time!), here are the 7 differences between the two instruments:

1. Lack of Eddie's signature on the headstock (obviously)

2. Toggle switch is moved down below the volume knob, instead of the original location near the bottom horn/below the neck pickup.

3. Body is now contoured on back where your stomach and guitar meet.

4. Neck width at higher frets is increased by 1/32" to avoid high E string slippage.

5. "Tone" knob is now a "Volume" knob.

6. Offset saddles on the Floyd (EVH), non-offset on the Axis.

7. ...one could argue money/price, depending on the market at the time, but that's personal preference.
